Historical Development of the Central New York Labor Agency

The Central New York Labor Agency was incorporated in 1979 as an independent member agency. The Agency employed AFL-CIO Community Services Liaison who worked directly with United Way. This staff position included campaign activities, information and referral, union counselor training program and campaign account development with organized labor. The establishment of an independent member agency was to increase the ability of the AFL-CIO Central New York Labor Council and its affiliates to secure the provision of Information and Referral services to union members.
The Labor Agency was established as an independent 501c3 in our community, our obligations expanded to serving all individuals in need of Information and Referral regardless of affiliation or whether a workplace is union or non-union. The purpose was to serve all individuals, work organizations and the community without viewing the provision of service to one entity as a loss to another.
